I have now read almost all of Robin Whaley's books over the past month, especially those books on Nik software. I have read other guides to software, but none compare to the clarity of these. He provides the essential details about how and when to use the software as well as an understanding of the principles and concepts that guide the use of the software. He employs ample examples show step-by-step how to achieve the most from the software. His writing style is straightforward, concise, and easy to read (without the cute attempts at humor found in other books). I have learned much from him. Now I am reading them again to engrain his lessons into my habits. I hope he will continue to produce such guides.Product details

Very informative.
written in clear language, concise, to the point, covering all important aspects with worked out cases.
I had purchased the Nik Efex from Start to FInish book on before I actually owned the software, filters package. I had read some of Mr. Whalley's earlier works & was impressed by how thorough but yet accessible he made the content for a not very sophisticated photoshop user (late to the software; was trying to use specific camera maker's software that eventually went belly up, sort of). Oh, I purchased the entire Nik Efex series that MR. Whalley wrote, as they were on a "one-time" sale, $1 vs. $4 for each text (I think that is right).
Then Google began giving the Nik Efex filters away for free, cost nada... how cool is that? Thus, I already had the books. And began pecking away at learning the filters, which i only minimally use as I am not interested in changing the appearance of the photos i take dramatically. I'll try to get it "right" when taking the photo, you know...
So, I'm not disappointed with the Nik Efex text (this book) or the other NIk filter texts by the author. He might misspell a word here & there or forget a item of punctuation & that funky "English English"... but he's holding my hand as i work through the text & his examples that he provides. "Thank you Mr. Whalley!"
This is a very nice and comprenhensive book about Nik Software. Although it doesn't cover all the details, it will give enough information for you to take off using it. Very recommended.
I have used the Google-Nik plug-ins for a long time and have achieved prize-winning results - but I learned some key points thanks to the recent help books by Robin Whalley. The is a neat platform for these books.

An excellent explanation about how this software works, what it does and why, to allow you to get the very best out of processing your image. I am a huge fan of Robin's work and books and have several in my collection, this was the first and to me the most useful as I use Silver Efex myself. In fact it was after seeing Robin's images on his blog that inspired me to get serious about BW photography )
This is all the manual on Nik Silver Efex you will ever need, and excellent for beginners.
My only complaint is that some of the images are a little small esp when viewing on my ipad so some of the finer detail is not always visible.
